52 Châteaux, 52 Weeks: Our Epic Journey Through France Begins

52 Chateaux in 52 Weeks

Follow our adventure: #52Châteaux

The morning sun catches the Loire Valley mist just right, turning it into a golden veil that dances around centuries-old spires. This isn’t just another travel photo – it’s a glimpse into our future. Back home, our life fits neatly into numbered storage containers, each box a reminder of the comfortable existence we’re trading for this dream. Our family photos, holiday decorations, and the familiar rhythms of home life are being carefully packed away. Even our beloved coffee maker, which has faithfully brewed countless morning cups, is headed into hibernation.

The decision to leave everything behind – to say goodbye to family Sunday dinners, impromptu movie nights with friends, and the reliable comfort of our own bed – wasn’t easy. But some dreams demand everything you’ve got. We’re Monte and Sixteen Schumacher, founders of Saving Castles, and we’re about to embark on what might be the most ambitious château exploration ever attempted: spending each week of 2025 immersed in the heart of a different architectural masterpiece. Fifty-two châteaux, fifty-two weeks, and one chance to document these magnificent structures in ways they’ve never been seen before.

Our parents think we’re a little crazy. Our friends alternate between envy and concern. But when you hear the stones of these ancient buildings whispering their secrets, when you see the morning light paint centuries-old walls in golden hues, you realize some callings are worth upending your entire life for.

The Dream Takes Shape: Why We're Going All In

Have you ever had a moment when everything just clicks? When the wild idea you’ve been nurturing suddenly doesn’t seem so wild anymore? That’s what happened to us on a crisp autumn morning last year, standing in the shadow of Château de Chenonceau. The early light was playing across the Loire River, casting dancing reflections on the château’s face, and the morning mist still clung to the ancient stones like a lover reluctant to let go. We weren’t just looking at a castle – we were seeing countless untold stories, hidden passages waiting to be explored, and generations of history begging to be shared with the world.

Sixteen reached out to touch the weathered stone, and in that moment, we both felt it – the pulse of centuries beating beneath our fingers. Every worn step, every smoothed banister, every time-softened corner tells the story of countless hands, countless lives that have passed this way before. The château seemed to whisper to us, asking us to look deeper, to see beyond the picture-postcard beauty to the soul of the place.

This isn’t just about visiting pretty buildings or checking off items on a tourist’s bucket list. Through Saving Castles, we’ve spent years documenting and preserving historical architecture, watching sunrises paint medieval towers in gold and listening to the quiet songs of ancient stones. But France’s châteaux? They’re different. Each one is a chapter in a grand story that spans centuries, written in limestone and legacy, in gardens and grandeur, in triumph and tragedy. And now, we’re about to read every single page.

That morning at Chenonceau taught us something profound: these châteaux aren’t just monuments to the past – they’re bridges to it. Every spiral staircase is a time machine, every great hall an echo chamber of history, every garden a living canvas that’s been painted and repainted through seasons and centuries. As we stood there, watching swallows dive and swoop through the morning air just as they must have done hundreds of years ago, we knew we had to do more than just visit these places. We had to live them, breathe them, understand them in a way that few have attempted before.

Beyond the Tourist Trail: Our Unique Approach

Forget rushed tours and surface-level snapshots. Our journey will take us deep into the heart of château life. We’ll be:

  • Living in different regions throughout the year, following the rhythm of local life
  • Meeting the families who still call these magnificent buildings home
  • Documenting restoration projects most visitors never see
  • Uncovering the hidden stories that don’t make it into guidebooks
  • Experiencing each château through all four seasons

We’re not just passing through – we’re embedding ourselves in these communities, learning their stories, and sharing them with you in ways that have never been done before.
