Our Heritage Alert Methodology

Identification Process

The Saving Castles Heritage Alert employs a systematic approach to identifying at-risk historic structures worthy of international attention. Our process begins with extensive research across regional preservation databases, academic publications, and consultations with local heritage organizations to create a preliminary list of endangered sites.

Evaluation Criteria

Each potential Heritage Alert site undergoes thorough evaluation against our standardized criteria:

  1. Historical Significance: We assess the structure’s importance to local, regional, or international history, including its age, rarity, and connection to significant historical events or figures.
  2. Architectural Merit: Our experts evaluate the building’s architectural qualities, construction techniques, artistic elements, and uniqueness within its historical context.
  3. State of Endangerment: We prioritize structures facing imminent threats such as severe structural instability, weather damage, abandonment, inappropriate development, or insufficient maintenance.
  4. Restoration Viability: Sites must have technically feasible and culturally appropriate restoration plans that adhere to international preservation standards.
  5. Organizational Capacity: We verify that a legitimate preservation organization with appropriate expertise oversees the restoration project and can responsibly manage support received.
  6. Documentation Quality: Preference is given to projects with thorough historical documentation and detailed assessment of current conditions to ensure authentic restoration.

Review Process

Our international advisory committee of preservation professionals, architectural historians, and heritage management experts conducts final reviews of each potential site. This multi-disciplinary team ensures balanced evaluation and brings diverse expertise to our selection process.

Ongoing Monitoring

Featured projects undergo regular reassessment to track progress, verify appropriate use of resources, and document successful preservation outcomes. This accountability ensures the Heritage Alert maintains its credibility and effectiveness as an advocacy tool.
