Ashford Castle Review: A Royal Experience in the Heart of Ireland

As we stepped onto the grounds of Ashford Castle, we knew we were in for an unforgettable experience. This 800-year-old castle, nestled on the shores of Lough Corrib in County Mayo, Ireland, offers a unique blend of history, luxury, and Irish hospitality. Let us take you through our stay at this magnificent property.

First Impressions: A Majestic Welcome

The approach to Ashford Castle is nothing short of breathtaking. The winding driveway, framed by ancient woodlands, builds anticipation until the castle’s impressive silhouette comes into view. Crossing the stone bridge and passing through the medieval arched gateway, we felt transported to another era.

The welcome was impeccable. Doormen in top hats and tails ushered us into the oak-paneled reception area, where we were greeted by name and offered a glass of champagne. This personal touch set the tone for our entire stay.

Accommodation: Regal Comfort Meets Modern Luxury

Our Deluxe Queen room was a perfect blend of historical charm and contemporary comfort. Rich fabrics in deep reds and golds complemented the antique furniture, while modern amenities like a flat-screen TV and Bluetooth speakers were discreetly integrated.

The marble bathroom was spacious, featuring both a rain shower and a clawfoot tub. But it was the view that truly captivated us – tall windows framed a picturesque scene of Lough Corrib and the castle gardens, a view that changed beautifully with the light throughout the day.

Dining: A Gastronomic Journey Through Ireland

George V Dining Room

The culinary experiences at Ashford Castle are nothing short of extraordinary. The George V Dining Room, the castle’s flagship restaurant, offers a gastronomic journey through the best of Irish produce. The seven-course tasting menu we enjoyed was a masterpiece, from the amuse-bouche of smoked eel with apple to the Connemara lamb with wild garlic.

Cullen’s at the Cottage

For a more casual dining experience, Cullen’s at the Cottage is a gem. Set in a thatched cottage just a short walk from the main building, it offers hearty Irish fare with a modern twist. The seafood chowder, brimming with fresh fish and shellfish, was a standout.

Breakfast Fit for Royalty

Breakfast in the George V Dining Room was a grand affair, with an extensive buffet of Irish specialties and made-to-order hot dishes. The smoked salmon from Connemara and the full Irish breakfast with black and white pudding were particular highlights.

Activities: Adventure and Relaxation in Equal Measure

Ashford Castle offers a wealth of activities to suit all tastes:

  • Falconry at Ireland’s first school of falconry
  • Clay pigeon shooting
  • Horseback riding through woodland trails
  • Golf on a challenging 9-hole course
  • Boat trips on Lough Corrib
  • Archery
  • Fishing

We particularly enjoyed the falconry experience – feeling the weight of a Harris hawk on our gloved hands and watching it soar and return was truly unforgettable.

The Spa: A Haven of Tranquility

The spa at Ashford Castle is a world-class facility. With its beautiful indoor pool, steam room, and relaxation areas, it’s the perfect place to unwind. We indulged in a seaweed wrap followed by a full body massage, which left us feeling thoroughly pampered and rejuvenated.

Evening Entertainment: From Whiskey to Traditional Music

The Prince of Wales Bar became our evening retreat. Its cozy atmosphere, with dark wood paneling and an open fireplace, was perfect for sipping Irish whiskey and chatting with other guests. On one memorable evening, we were treated to an impromptu traditional music session, with local musicians filling the bar with the sounds of fiddles and bodhráns.

Service: The Heart of Irish Hospitality

What truly sets Ashford Castle apart is its impeccable service. From the housekeeping staff to the concierge, every interaction was characterized by warmth, efficiency, and genuine care. The staff’s attention to detail and ability to anticipate guests’ needs elevated the entire experience.

Sustainability: Luxury with a Conscience

We were impressed by Ashford Castle’s commitment to sustainability. The kitchen garden supplies much of the produce used in the restaurants, and on-site bee hives provide honey for breakfast. It’s refreshing to see a luxury property taking meaningful steps to minimize its environmental impact.

Final Thoughts: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

Ashford Castle is more than just a hotel – it’s a destination in itself. It offers a unique opportunity to step into a world of aristocratic luxury while enjoying thoroughly modern comforts and activities. While it comes with a hefty price tag, for a special occasion or a once-in-a-lifetime splurge, Ashford Castle offers value that goes beyond mere monetary considerations.

From the moment you arrive until your reluctant departure, Ashford Castle doesn’t just meet expectations – it exceeds them, creating memories that will last a lifetime. As we drove away, we were already planning our return visit, eager to experience again the magic of this Irish treasure.
